Welcome to Carolina Herper, a website dedicated to my herp outings in the great state of North Carolina. You can find my trip reports from around here in the Carolina Field Notes, while all my other reports can be found in the Other Field Notes

North Carolina offers some of the best herping in the country. With 37 species of snakes, 30 species of frogs and toads, 12 species of lizards, 20 species of turtles, and 45 species of salamanders, as well as the American Alligator, the diversity in the Tar Heel State can keep a herper busy all year long. Couple this with the huge range in habitat - the Appalachian Mountains in the west, the central Piedmont, and the Coastal Plain to the east - as well as a warm climate from early March to late November, and you have a herpers paradise.
